Dance in the water
Just ten minutes: this is the time to wait to see MecVel screw jacks at work during the incredible opening ceremony of the Swimming World Championships 2015 in Russia.
All begins with a countdown lighting up on the 16th FINA World Championships at the Tatneft Arena Sports Palace in Kazan, one of the biggest and most well-equipped ice palaces in Russia and Europe. Sounds of nature, chirping birds, squealing of whales and dolphins, music and water drops that slide and fall, project every single spectator on the shore of the sea: this is the wonderful background that frames the beginning of the show, followed by a real explosion of energy and magic brought to the stage by more than 200 dancers, circus artists and athletes.
But the official start is given by the swimmer Nikita Korolev, a native of Kazan, national swimming champion and medalist, protagonist of a video displayed on the screens of the Arena Sports Palace, in which he faces a long swim, symbol of a long journey to Kazan, and then he dives into the depth of the sea, bringing the audience to hold the breath together with him. And then the attention moves from the screens to the center of the stage, to the beautiful blue swimming pool surrounded by darkness, from which suddenly emerges the swimmer, accompanied in its lift by MecVel screw jacks, that push the platform located on the bottom of the swimming pool, allowing the swimmer to move in a few seconds from the depth of the sea to a completely emerged stage. The role of the screw jack, in fact, in this case is to convert the rotary motion of a motor into a linear movement of vertical lifting.
The water, and with this a lot of incredible effects, remain protagonists for the entire show, obviously together with the central swimming pool and the platform located on the bottom and moved from four MecVel scew jacks, the only ones able to make possible the beautiful dances close to the water’s surface, as well as the even more spectacular dances in immersion.
The optimal solution developed and manufactured by MecVel involves the use of the HR50 series, with increased stems (65 mm diameter, 36 mm pitch), and especially watertight cases for gearboxes, as all four screw jacks were positioned below the level of the water for the whole ceremony. HR serie is characterized by a trapezoidal screw that rotates integrally with the gearbox wheel, also in terms of speed, while the linear motion is performed by the nut travelling up and down along the rotating screw. This nut must be fixed to the structure to avoid rotation with the screw. These products find their perfect combination in a “four corner” configuration, where the four screw jacks connected among them by means of shafts, couplings and bevel gears, allow the transmission of the movement with high precision and a perfect synchronism, even if the load is not equally distributed.
All this has been possible thanks to years of experience and technical knowledge, as the company constantly updates its 100% “Made in Italy” range according to market requests, designs and customizes innovative and competitive products in order to meet each customer need. For these reasons MecVel is able to offer complete solutions for all sorts of applications, also thanks to the important role of new technologies applied.
